The two words that come to mind when I think of Little Big Man are “silly” and “violent”.  It’s a comedy about a lovable turncoat, nimbly hopping between the warring American soldiers and Native Americans in the late 1800s.  The comedy is less silly than Mel Brooks, but close.  The violence is appropriately heavy for a film about the treatment of Native Americans, as it should be.  I think I read that it was “drole, but important” in some review after I watched it… I don’t know how important it is historically, but it’s an enjoyable movie, especially if you’re in the mood for a Native American epic tale, as I know you often are.

Dustin Hoffman is young and adorable in this film.

Yikes! In the parts of the film when he’s not 121…

He was 33 and already had The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy under his belt.  Hot damn.
