Spoiler Alert

Ohhh it felt good to cross this gem off my list!  Dog Day Afternoon has been hovering at the top of my to-see for years now.  SO. GOOD.  Possibly my favorite role for Al Pacino?

Plus he looks like my friend Jim.  Too bad I can’t find a decent photo on Jim’s facebook to use without his permission.  (You’re welcome, Jim.)

The best part about this messy tale of thievery is that it’s TRUE.  And, like most dramatizations of real events, the truth turns out to be stranger.  The real-life “Sonny” (John Wojtowicz) served his sentence until April 1987.  His partner, who took the name Elizabeth after getting the sex-change surgery (funded not by the bank robbery, but by selling the rights to the story!), died of AIDS-related illness in September 1987.

It’s too much, too much.
