Does the above image frighten you? Does it creep you out, even a little? Don’t let your answer determine whether or not you will enjoy this low-budg “horror” film The Children, but keep in mind: that 8 year-old with black nail polish is the “villain”. My use of quotation marks signifies sarcasm. This movie is not scary at all. However! It’s a pretty awesome movie nonetheless! It’s as though your friend who went to film school decided to shoot a completely serious horror film in her/his hometown and instead of being terrible, it was actually pretty awesome (for a low-budget horror film that your friend made).
Here’s where its value lies: 1. the camera work is lovely and surprisingly stylized 2. while the zombies are just slow-moving kids with black nail polish, the damage they do is brutal! and by that I mean, the special effects are impressive, not their actual attacks 3. the parts that are boring/badly written are hilarious. It’s a fun mix of so-bad-it’s-funny and crazy zombie attacks, which kept me watching. I had also spent the evening babysitting my nephews, a job I’m rarely available for because of my normal 3000 mile distance from them. Gregory (.2 years) was screaming like a little banshee baby all night as a tooth came in, and Luke (3.5 years) threw up in his hand accidentally (?), so I was on board with The Children immediately.
Who has seen The Children besides me? More people than before Hulu Plus existed, I guarantee. But what a great poster! :

FINALLY!
